Family Support

We are here to help you navigate your child's medical crisis.

Our team includes professional social workers and trained family support professionals who provide compassionate emotional support, resources, and individualized care throughout each family’s stay. They are here to listen, help families navigate their unique concerns, and connect them with resources and support during their time at the House and beyond.

Internship Program

We also provide internship opportunities for social work students and other professionals pursuing careers focused on supporting children and families.

Our goal is to help RMH-NY families acclimate. Our services help you focus on what’s most important: your child’s health.

Support Includes

Family Support creates a caring, supportive environment through weekly support groups and is open to caregivers staying at the House. Our different support groups offer reflection, conversation, and creativity.

Support groups offer families a welcoming space to connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges. They provide an opportunity to share experiences, ask questions, learn from one another, or simply listen.

Every group at RMH-NY is different, and there is no expectation to share. Some groups are geared towards people who want to create while others are an opportunity to connect and talk. You are welcome to join when you’re ready and participate in whatever way feels comfortable. Families may find connections, new ideas, coping strategies, helpful information, or simply a reminder that they are not alone.

We welcome you to explore our support groups and find one that feels right for you and your family. Please visit the Family Support office to learn more.

Language Support Services

  • Interpretation services, video and phone services, are offered 24/7 upon request. RMH-NY utilizes translations services when interacting with patients and families in need of language assistance.
  • Translation services are at no cost to patient and families.
  • Written materials and key policies are available in multiple languages
  • Staff will make every reasonable effort to ensure guests understand safety procedures, emergency information, and critical communications.

When it’s time to think about what comes next, our Family Support team can help families navigate the transition. We can connect you with resources and services that support continued care, help prepare for returning home, and make the next steps feel more manageable.

We can not lessen the pain of loss, but we are here to offer support. The Bereavement Program at RMH-NY provides support and guidance to bereaved parents and family members following loss. Our program provides emotional support, referral information and grief resources. We work with families to assist with communicating with hospitals, funeral homes and burial services. We provide information for our families about what funeral services may look like at this time to help prepare and support.

Bereavement Packages and Comfort Shawls

When we know of a family at the House that has experienced a recent loss, in addition to outreach calls and offering emotional support, we offer bereavement packages. These packages contain a comfort shawl, meant to be an offering of comfort in the face of loss. These shawls are hand knitted by members of the RMH-NY community.

Reflection Garden

If you need a place to reflect, we encourage you to check out our Reflection Garden on the 7th floor. This is not just a place for individuals grieving a loss, but for anyone in need of a peaceful place to reflect.

We want to hear from you! Whether you have stayed with us once for a night or have had many stays over the years, we want to hear from you! We love sharing stories from families in our community because each one is unique and tells the story of RMH-NY. You can talk about your child, what brought you to our House, your favorite things about staying here or anything else that comes to mind. If you are interested, please reach out to family@rmh-newyork.org with your name and contact information.

Thank you for your time and willingness to share.
